Hey, it took until 2026 to get here, but at last it’s happened!
Transworld, a division of Penguin Random House (PRH), is launching its first specialist horror imprint, 3AM Books, alongside a branded online reader community – signalling a strategic investment in one of publishing’s fastest-growing genres.
Editorial structure and positioning
The imprint will be led by publishing director @Rachel Winterbottom Rachel Winterbottom, supported by editorial director Simon Taylor, editor Nicole Witmer and assistant editor Anna Carvanova.
Marketing and publicity will be handled by a dedicated team, reflecting PRH’s intent to build a vertically integrated brand with strong consumer reach.
Housed within Transworld’s fiction division, 3AM Books aims to publish across the spectrum of modern horror – from commercial thrillers to niche subgenres such as folk horror and “femgore”.
Launch list and brand identity
The inaugural title, Fawn by debut author CN Vair, is scheduled for August 2026. It will be followed by Splasher by Billie Host and a reissue of The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty – a title with strong legacy ties to Transworld’s backlist.
The imprint’s name and visual identity – developed by Leon Dufour – draw on the “witching hour” concept, positioning the list around immersive, compulsive reading experiences and community engagement. That’s worth further exploration at some point, the witching hour is now 3AM not midnight, reflecting modern life-styles.
Market context: horror’s commercial resurgence
The move reflects a wider resurgence in horror publishing. Sales of horror titles have grown significantly in key English-language markets since the pandemic, driven by younger readers on platforms like TikTok (#BookTok) and a crossover with thriller, fantasy and romance audiences.
Industry data from organisations such as Nielsen BookData has shown consistent year-on-year growth in horror and dark fiction categories, with particular strength in debut and high-concept titles.
At the same time, publishers are increasingly formalising genre imprints to build brand loyalty and discoverability – mirroring strategies seen in crime, romance and science fiction lists.
The View From The Beach
A notable feature of 3AM Books is its integrated online community, aligning with a broader shift towards reader-centric publishing ecosystems. By combining acquisitions, brand identity and audience engagement, Transworld is positioning the imprint not just as a list, but as a cultural hub for horror readership.
Hey, it took until 2026 to get here, but at last it’s happened!
For PRH, the launch fills a long-standing gap in its imprint portfolio and signals confidence in horror as both a commercial and culturally dynamic category. With a blend of backlist revival, debut discovery and subgenre breadth, 3AM Books is designed to scale quickly in a competitive market increasingly shaped by fan communities and digital discovery.
