As the largest Islamic state in the world, and the fourth most populated, Indonesia is a natural target book market for Iranian publishers, and this week at the Indonesia International Book Fair Iran’s ambitions were spelled out.

Per Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi, “The Indonesian language is not only limited to this country, but more than 400 million people in the world speak Indonesian, and entering Indonesia is entering the ASEAN region, which has a population of about 800 million people. We can look at this region as an 800-million book market.”

150 publishers from Indonesia and over 25 countries make u this year’s exhibitors in Jakarta, where South Korea is the Guest of Honour. This year’s event ran September 27 through October 1.

The Indonesian International Book Fair was immediately preceded by the Indonesian Islamic Book Fair.

So far, coverage of the 2023 Indonesian International Book Fair has been sparse, but those interested in the planned events can head to the official website, in English and Indonesian.
