Books – in whatever format – need to get noticed to sell, and audiobooks, which tend not to get seen by booklovers on the bricks & mortar bookstore circuit, need to not just be good and sound good, but have to be seen to be good.

Okay, some may be unfamiliar with these awards, which are not publishing industry awards per se but rather awards for advertising, design and digital marketing is probably even more important for digital books than for print.

But this goes to the heart of successful publishing, because books – in whatever format – need to get noticed to sell, and audiobooks, which tend not to get seen by booklovers on the bricks & mortar bookstore circuit, need to not just be good and sound good, but have to be seen to be good.

So while the traditional audiobooks awards criteria – narrative, sound production and all that jazz – righty dominate the audio awards industry, it’s great to see other contributors to the success of audiobooks getting the recognition they deserve.

In this instance it is B-Reel’s promo campaign for Storytel’s audio drama adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian classic “1984” that is shortlisted.

The campaign, “2022 sounds like 1984”, has “been shortlisted in two categories at the prestigious international awards programme the One Show 2023, to be held in New York on May 19. The categories are “Integrated: Craft – Storytelling” and “Film & Video: Television & VOD – 31-60 Seconds – Single”.

The One Show, operated by the One Club, “is among the top three awards programmes for advertising, design and digital marketing in the world.

Not content with this achievement, Storytel and B-Reel are also shortlisted for the Webby Awards (for excellence on the internet), in the categories “Best Copywriting” and “Craft (Advertising, Media & PR)”. The winners will be announced April 25, and the ceremony will be May 15.
