The way to minimise the damage is to embrace the positives so we can understand and reign in the negatives as we go. Luddite kneejerk responses and attempts to stifle organic development of AI will help no-one.
“After a cautious approach to ChatGPT-type products, guilds and creators are becoming more vocal about limiting AI’s influence in entertainment.”
The Hollywood Reporter suggests film and TV creators are on the same page as many publishers and will seek to restrain AI development wherever possible instead of working with it and exploring its full potential.
OpenAI’s co-founder and president, Greg Brockman, described AI as an “amplification of what humans can do” – a perspective very much in line with the TNPS view.
Others take a different viewpoint.
The union SAG-AFTRA has said:
“Human creators are the foundation of the creative industries and we must ensure that they are respected and paid for their work. Governments should not create new copyright or other IP exemptions that allow AI developers to exploit creative works, or professional voices and likenesses, without permission or compensation. Trustworthiness and transparency are essential to the success of AI. SAG-AFTRA will continue to prioritize the protection of our member performers against the unauthorized use of their voices, likenesses and performances.”
Nothing to argue with there except the first line. “Human creators are the foundation of the creative industries.”
If that’s so, what’s the problem?
The real issue here is that that assertion is no longer true.
Untrue in the same way that people and horses were the foundation of industrial production, until machines and steam-power allowed them to move on to new endeavours.
Ensuring AI develops in the interests of all is of course a given. And as this is uncharted waters there will be casualties along the way, mistakes made, and exploitation will happen.
The way to minimise the damage is to embrace the positives so we can understand and reign in the negatives as we go. Luddite kneejerk responses and attempts to stifle organic development of AI will help no-one.
Replace anxiety with caution and we can move forward.
