Long the biggest online book retailer in Australia (Amazon has yet to release any figures since its December 2017 launch to suggest otherwise), Booktopia this week announced it will be the exclusive Australian distributor for Germany-based Thieme Medical Publishers.
Thieme is the latest recruit to Booktopia Publisher Services (BPS), set up, explains the Australian industry journal Books & Publishing,
in late 2017 to offer Australian and international publishers book distribution and wholesale services into the Australian and New Zealand marketplace. Booktopia says ‘a number’ of other publishers have recently signed up to BPS, and it expects more will follow over the coming year.
Booktopia CEO and co-founder Tony Nash told Books & Publishing the company is a $120 million (US $88million) book business.
The decision to launch BPS is in the best interest of book buying customers. Having access to stock that is situated in Australia is critical to maintain the highest level of service to customers.
It is also important to booksellers to know that they can access stock from the Booktopia Distribution Centre at wholesale rates. Bookstores have been buying stock from Booktopia for years and it is good timing to launch BPS so they can set up accounts and trade with us to help serve the Australian book buying public.
As well as being Australia’s biggest online bookstore in its own right Booktopia, founded in 2001 and operating from Lidcombe, New South Wales, also owns former rival Angus & Robertson, which it acquired three years ago this month, along with Bookworld, from Penguin Random House.
