India – Germany will be the focus country at the 48th International Kolkata Book Fair running January 28 to February 9 this year.

The book fair will highlight Germany’s literary achievements, cultural diversity, and growing collaborations with India and South Asia. The opening ceremony will feature key dignitaries, including West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann, and Marla Stukenberg, Regional Director of the Goethe-Institut South Asia. Peter Limbourg, Director General of Deutsche Welle, will also be present.

Germany’s participation will include book launches, panel discussions, cultural performances, and interactive workshops. The theme pavilion, “Shelf Life,” designed by architect Anupama Kundoo, will reflect the significance of books and sustainable practices.

The pavilion will host activities under categories like Book Talks, Young Readers, and Science Talks. Participating authors include Ulrike Almut Sandig, Monica Cantieni, and David Wagner, alongside graphic novelists Aisha Franz and Bea Davies.

Per the press release, Tridib Kumar Chattopadhyay, President of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild, expressed pride in having Germany as the focal theme country for the first time.
