But isn’t “pretty ambiguous and hypothetical” exactly how we would have described the internet itself in its early incarnations?

Snap’s CEO Evan Spiegel last week called the Metaverse “pretty ambiguous and hypothetical”.

It’s an interesting perspective from Spiegel that stands in stark contrast to the pserspectve of Mark Zuckerberg, who rebranded Facebook as Meta to demonstrate his vision of the metaverse future.

But isn’t “pretty ambiguous and hypothetical” exactly how we would have described the internet itself in its early incarnations?

As with crypto-currencies, blockchain, NFTs, AR, VR, AI and every other cyberfad that comes along, there’s usually some real substance hidden away beneath the hype, and all the above are working well for some people some of the time.

In fact, as the The Guardian points out, Spiegel’s Snap is investing heavily in AR right now, so we might see his dismissal of the metaverse as big-tech sniping at a rival rather than a meaningful analysis, and that’s certainly where I stand.

It’s far too soon to be betting the kids’ inheritance on the metaverse, but also far too soon to be dismissing it out of hand.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel’s words may yet come back to haunt him.
