Sweden’s Storytel and Brazil’s Tocalivros have decided that partnering for market share might be a better option than fighting one another.

São Paulo based Tocalivros is one of many audiobooks platforms we in the Anglophone world have likely never heard of, but that is a significant player in its home market, in this case Brazil.

Along with Ubook, Tocalivros had pretty much owned the Brazilian audiobooks market until Storytel came along in 2019 –

and while it’s still likely Ubook and Tocalivros hold the lion’s share of the market, it might be that Tocalivros is feeling the pressure.

Because at the end of the day, even in a market of 210 million people, 153 million of whom are online, consumer dollars – or reals in this case – can only stretch so far. So what is a Brazilian booklover to do when confronted with not one but three major unlimited subscription audiobook platforms?

Storytel and Tocalivros have decided that partnering for market share might be a better option than fighting one another.

Per a report in PublishNews, Tocalivros will now have part of its 2,500 audiobook catalogue available on the Storytel platform. It’s not clear if any of the 20,000 ebooks on Tocalivros will be part of the share.

Like Storytel, Tocalivros produces its own content (more than 800 titles) as well as providing a platform for other publishers, but again it’s not clear if any of those Tocalivros originals will find their way to Storytel.
