The Malta Book Festival typically attracts 40,000 visitors, equivalent to almost 10% of the island’s population. This year it will be online.

With a population of just 433,000, of whom 360,000 are online, the Mediterranean island of Malta has a surprisingly vibrant publishing industry and book culture.

Malta’s National Book Council is responsible for the annual Malta Book Festival, which this year is being held online November 11-15.

Traditionally held at the Mediterranean Conference centre in Valetta, Covid-19 regulations mean the event this year will instead be streamed live online via the Malta National Book Council Facebook page. Access is free.

When inaugurated back in 1979 the event was called the Malta Book Fair. Since 2013 known as the Malta Book Festival, the event typically attracts 40,000 visitors, equivalent to almost 10% of the population.
