Stefan Żeromski’s Przedwiośnie will be read out by Poland’s presidential couple today at the annual National Reading Day event in Warsaw aimed at encouraging Poles to read more books.
President Andrzej Duda and First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda, joined by Deputy Prime Minister and Culture Minister Piotr Gliński and actors and other public figures, will read out excerpts from the 1925 classic at Warsaw’s Saski Garden.
The readathon will stretch beyond the capital however. Last year 2,000 towns and cities in Poland participated.
Stanisław Wyspiański’s 1901 play Wesele was the work of choice in 2017, when again the presidential couple lead the nation in its embrace of reading.
