[PRESS-RELEASE] StreetLib launches Totem, a B2B Print On Demand facility for Italian bookstores.

Milan, December 20 2019.

There’s much more to digital publishing than ebooks and audiobooks. Digital has also given a new lease of life to print, by enabling publishers to produce books with small print runs — right down to a single copy.

Print On Demand (POD) has proved popular with online stores like Amazon, which of course has its own POD facility that can deliver a book direct to a customer. But for booksellers POD is often seen as bypassing the traditional bookstore model. A threat rather than an opportunity.

But it needn’t be that way. POD can benefit traditional bookstores just as much as online sellers, and at the Rome independent publishers conference Più Libri Più Liberi earlier this month the Italian digital books distributor and publishing facilitator StreetLib announced an innovative new way for offline booksellers to enjoy the benefits of digital POD.

Totem is a new B2B portal for bookshops that aims to shorten the distance between publishers and retailers, with discounts up to 45%.

Publishers get to offer their titles in paperback print format to online and offline bookstores with no upfront costs, no print runs and no warehousing and distribution costs, and in any quantity, including single copies.

Bookstores get to offer their customers a catalogue of titles much larger than they can physically stock, that can be produced on demand in response to customer requests, even if the book is unavailable in the regular wholesale system they use.

StreetLib CEO Giacomo D’Angelo explained,

Each bookstore will have its own account with us, and the possibility to order as many or as few copies as they need of any print books published through StreetLib, taking advantage of a discount of up to 45% on the cover price. For the publisher and the author, the launch of Totem is an additional opportunity to sell their own titles while cutting costs and expanding the reach of their catalogue.

We are very excited by this new addition to our portfolio of services to the publishing community, which should serve as a reminder that at StreetLib we value all books, not just ebooks and audiobooks.

Totem is currently only available in Italy but we plan to expand this service to other countries in the near future.
