Brazil’s publishers anticipate deals worth $350,000 at Bologna

With London and Paris in the rear mirror, European book fair groupies have their next fix coming up on April 1 when the Bologna Children’s Book Fair gets underway in Italy.

A common feature at the world’s book fairs nowadays is Brazilian Publishers, an umbrella organization that looks after the best interests of, you guessed it, Brazilian publishers.

Eighteen publishing houses will be descending on Bologna next week as the stands are put in place for the 2019 Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

Among them, Editora Carochinha, SM Educação Brasil and Melhoramentos.

Editora Melhoramentos has been in the publishing game since 1915, while Carochinha only launched in 2013.

Brazilian Publishers itself was only set up in 2008 – a partnership between Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) – with the remit to help the export of Brazilian literature to foreign lands, and as per past TNPS posts, has done pretty well for itself.

In two recent book fairs Brazilian publishers helped secure deals worth over $1 million.

Last year at Bologna Brazilian Publishers oversaw deals worth $400,000, and this year anticipates at least $350,000, allowing some leeway to be pleasantly surprised.

Many deals will of course be with Italian publishers, but the beauty of events like these is that they are truly international affairs with publishers, agents and scouts from around the world on the lookout for deals.

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair runs from April 1 through April 4.
