A vital platform for experimental publishing, connecting regional practitioners with a global network of independent presses.
Sharjah Art Foundation’s eighth edition of Focal Point, its annual art book fair, is live now, running from 12–14 December 2025 at the heritage site Bait Obaid Al Shamsi.
This three-day event has evolved into a vital platform for experimental publishing, connecting regional practitioners with a global network of independent presses.
Programme Highlights
The fair showcases artists’ books, zines, and limited-edition publications from over 60 international participants. Key launches include The Eyes of Gaza: A Diary of Resilience, Tehran Zine’s migration-focused Souvenirs from Iran, and the seventh volume of comic anthology Corniche.
Per the press release, specialist workshops will cover publishing processes, risograph printing, colour separation, and multi-layer stencil techniques . A Reading Room curated by Bootleg Griot, a DIY Postcard Station, and the Focal Point Printing Press lounge offer immersive engagement.
Global Participation
Participants span five continents, from Slanted Publishers (Germany) and BOM DIA (also Germany, despite the name) to 32° East (Uganda), Akakir Studio (Algeria), and Kaph Books (Dubai/Beirut) . UAE-based artists receive dedicated sections, while the Foundation’s recommendations highlight emerging voices.
The View From The Beach
Focal Point distinguishes itself from commercial book fairs by prioritising experimental print culture and community-building.
For publishing professionals, it offers:
Direct access to alternative distribution models
Insights into low-volume, high-impact production techniques
Networking with non-commercial cultural producers
Exposure to MENA region publishing innovations
The fair’s focus on material experimentation and cross-cultural dialogue makes it essential for those tracking the future of independent publishing.
