It’s interesting to contrast the way Bologna continues to expand its international footprint, and in particular its embrace of India while Frankfurt and London look the other way.
The Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation (TNTB&ESC), widely recognised for its expertise in textbook publishing for schools, is venturing into the toddler book market.
At the recent Bologna Children’s Book Fair, TNTB&ESC signed agreements with leading publishers from London and Singapore to co-publish an innovative range of books tailored to the unique needs of toddlers. This groundbreaking endeavour includes sound books, pop-up books, board books, flip books, and more, featuring content in both Tamil and English.
Diversification Beyond Textbooks
Traditionally, TNTB&ESC has focused its efforts on printing school textbooks, translating literary works, republishing classics, and producing children’s literature under programmes like Ilandhalir Ilakkiya Thittam.
In a pivot towards inclusivity and innovation, TNTB&ESC acquired rights to 160 titles, 30 of which have been published, with an additional 50 slated for release soon. These titles are being distributed to government schools, enriching the reading experience of countless children.
However, this latest collaboration signals a significant leap forward, targeting toddlers for the first time and introducing them to engaging, developmental literature.
The Untapped Market of Toddler Books
As T Sankara Saravanan, Joint Director (Translation) at TNTB&ESC, points out, the market for toddler books remains underdeveloped, particularly in regional languages. While some options exist in English, the variety and cultural relevance are often limited.
Now, sound books such as My First 100 Words will allow children to see images and hear their pronunciation in Tamil and English, fostering bilingual learning at an early age. Case books will introduce themes like emotions, helping toddlers understand complex feelings through simplified, engaging narratives.
The View From the Beach
Co-publishing offers a unique framework for collaboration, enabling partners to pool resources, expertise, and technology to create world-class products. In the case of TNTB&ESC, teaming up with seasoned international publishers addresses technological limitations faced in India, such as producing high-quality pop-up and sound books. The collaboration also enhances market reach, allowing Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural heritage to shine on a global stage through literature.
A Platform for Mutual Growth
Another facet of this collaboration is the reciprocal agreement between TNTB&ESC and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair organisers. Tamil Nadu will receive a free stall at Bologna annually, while the fast-growing Chennai International Book Fair will provide a dedicated space for Bologna organisers.
In closing, it’s interesting to contrast the way Bologna continues to expand its international footprint, and in particular its embrace of India while Frankfurt and London look the other way.
