Professor Shahidha Bari, Chair of The Unwin Award 2025 Judging Panel, highlighted the power of books and publishing in shaping public awareness, influencing policy, and sparking conversations on national identity, the natural world, freedom of speech, and gender politics.
The UK’s Publishers Association is reporting that the Unwin Award has announced the six writers shortlisted for its inaugural year, recognising emerging non-fiction authors.
With a prize worth £10,000, the winner will be revealed at a ceremony at The Royal Institution on 1 April 2025.
Shortlisted Authors
Catherine Belton – author of “Putin’s People: How the KGB Took Back Russia and then Took on the West.”
Caroline Criado-Perez – a writer, broadcaster, and feminist campaigner whose book “Invisible Women” won multiple awards, including the FT & McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award.
Helen Czerski – a physicist, oceanographer, broadcaster, and authorof “Blue Machine.”
Afua Hirsch – writer, filmmaker, journalist, and author of “Brit(ish).”
Guy Shrubsole – author of “The Lost Rainforests of Britain,” and environmental campaigner.
Chris Van Tulleken – an infectious diseases doctor and BBC broadcaster, authored “Ultra-Processed People.”
Judging Panel and Statements

Award Purpose and Lecture
Administered by The Publishers Association, the Unwin Award and its companion Unwin Award Lecture focuses on the societal value of publishing, with the 2025 lecture to be delivered at the winner ceremony on 1 April.
