A bit like an industry version of BookTok without the video.
My first full day (fingers crossed) of reliable internet after months of frustration, and so much to catch up on.
Among the recent developments I missed was the launch of an industry podcast programme by Open Road Integrated Media Inc. (OR/M).
The Open Book Podcast with David Steinberger
A behind-the-scenes look at books and publishing
Per the website hype, the podcasts will include “wide-ranging discussions with publishers, editors, authors, journalists, thinkers, executives, and other makers of culture, hosted by David Steinberger, CEO of Open Road Media and Chairman of the National Book Foundation.“
There are two podcasts online as I write this:
Adventures of an Independent Publisher
Morgan Entrekin
President and Publisher of Grove Atlantic
and
Speaking For Books
Lisa Lucas
Former Publisher of Pantheon and Schocken, Former Executive Director of the National Book Foundation
Industry podcasts often tend to be so busy trying to be serious and professional and balanced that the enthusiasm of the interviewees for their subject is restrained, so I found these to be refreshingly lively, personal and conversational. A bit like an industry version of BookTok without the video.
A shame about the irritating guitar music in the intro, more suited to an amateur podcast from the attic than a professionally produced industry presentation. One might hope a company of OR/M’s stature could run to commissioning something original and more elegant to preface its podcasts, but with that one caveat, time well spent (20 and 25 minutes respectively.).
