Weekends and public holidays see substantial increases in visitor numbers, so the two additional public holidays could see the KIBF footfall soar.
Already one of the world’s largest book fairs by footfall and revenue, the 2024 Kolkata International book Fair may be bigger still, thanks to a change of dates.
Next year the KIBF – its 47th incarnation – will start roughly two weeks earlier than usual, on January 18 and finish by end of month. This year the event did not begin until January 31.
Sudhansu Dey, President of the fair’s organising body, the Publishers and Book Sellers Guild, explained: “We have been in talks since last year to advance the date of the book fair so that the book lovers get two additional state holidays — January 23 (birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose) and January 26 (Republic Day) — for visiting the fair.
