The Kenya Publishers Association has again partnered with Writers Guild-Kenya to allow self-published authors to exhibit their titles at the Nairobi International Book Fair, which this year runs September 27 through October 1.

It’s impossible to know how much self-publishing is impacting the Kenyan book market, with print notoriously difficult for self-publishers to get into in any country.

But Kenya is among the more advanced digital nations in Africa, with 47 million people online – five million more than Spain, ten million more than Canada, and twice that of Australia – and is an exciting developing digital books market despite the indifference of the big western ebook players.


Just how big the self-publishing market is is not known, but worth noting that in the first six months of 2023 Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited book subscription service paid out over $278 million in royalties to self-publishers.
