If spending hasn’t quite kept pace with growing attendance, still the Hong Kong Book Fair is one to watch this year.
The 2019 theme is Sci-Fi & Mystery and as usual there’s a mixture of speakers from Hong Kong, mainland China and around the world.
Running July 17-23 the 30th Hong Kong Book Fair, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), will be fielding 686 exhibitors from 39 countries.
The now regular Japan Pavilion and International Cultural Village will be big attractions for visitors from mainland China looking to find books that aren’t otherwise readily available.
That will in part explain the impressive attendance at the event. In 2017 visitor numbers fell just shy of one million, and in 2018 soared to 1.04 million, meaning an average of 150,000 visitors every day.
Spending per person dropped slightly in recent years, but volume more than compensated.
