Attendee preferences revealed notable trends for publishers to consider.

BIG BAD WOLF BOOKS [BBW BOOKS] has concluded its 2026 Dubai edition with record-breaking visitor numbers, demonstrating remarkable resilience in an extraordinarily challenging environment.

The fair showcased over one million books at Dubai Studio City under the theme “beyond noise,” with prices starting from AED 2 and discounts reaching up to 95%.

Co-Founder and CEO Andrew Yap highlighted the event’s significance: “We are happy to deliver a remarkable showcase this time with the highest participation in the history of the Big Bad Wolf.” The fair emphasised reading as “a tool for focus, learning, and personal growth in an increasingly distracted world.”

Audience Insights

Attendee preferences revealed notable trends for publishers to consider:

Early Learning Focus: Strong family interest in children’s board books and activity books, possibly indicating growing parental emphasis on reducing screen time.

Fiction Demand: High engagement with fiction and young adult titles among teenagers and young professionals.

Discovery Behaviour: Readers actively explored new titles rather than shopping with predetermined lists, suggesting opportunities for backlist and midlist discovery.

Programming Innovation

The STAGE WRITE 2026 workshop exemplified the fair’s interactive approach – a 48-hour playwriting initiative where the winning play will be professionally staged at X Fest 2026 in collaboration with The Junction.

This model extends the reader journey from consumption to creation, offering valuable lessons for publisher engagement strategies.

Operating Against the Odds

The Dubai edition’s success is particularly significant given the severe regional disruption caused by the ongoing Gulf conflict. Since late February 2026, Iran’s retaliatory strikes across the Gulf have created the most significant business disruption in the Middle East since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Impact on UAE Publishing Landscape:

Event Cancellations: The Muscat International Book Fair and the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair were among many events postponed.

Supply Chain Pressures: Industry logistics firm Publiship has warned of “ripple effects” on book supply chains, citing immediate challenges with capacity and goods supply into the Middle East.

The View From The Beach

Despite these headwinds, Big Bad Wolf’s accessibility-driven model – removing price barriers to cultivate reading habits – has proven its worth.

The fair’s continued expansion across 55 cities in 17 countries – Malaysia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, Tanzania, Kenya, and most recently, Egypt and Saudi Arabia – positions it as a barometer for print resilience in emerging markets.

One can safely assume Egypt and Saudi Arabia will not be seeing BBW events in the near future.
