While other countries may not have the UAE’s resources or govt. commitment to publishing to match the model in full, there’s much to be learned here.

The Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund (Onshur) recently celebrated the graduation of its first Scale Track cohort, a programme designed to help established UAE publishers grow sustainably and strategically in a rapidly evolving global market.

Twelve publishers were selected from a pool of 62 applicants, each demonstrating a strong track record in producing quality cultural content and a clear vision for expansion aligned with international publishing trends.

Practical Training and Industry Expertise

The Scale Track offers an intensive four-week curriculum focused on equipping publishers with practical tools for scaling up their operations. The training covers business model development, digital marketing, data management, and the use of modern technologies to expand reader reach.

Participants also benefit from networking opportunities with senior international publishers and industry experts, strengthening their ability to compete in global markets.

This year’s cohort reflects notable diversity, with 60% women and a broad mix of nationalities, reminding us of the UAE’s position as a regional publishing hub. The programme’s evaluation committee included Ahmed Bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the Emirates Publishers Association and other industry stakeholders. As a result, a rigorous selection process is ensured.

Post-Programme Support and Strategic Benefits

Graduates of the Scale Track receive a comprehensive support package. This includes one year of professional accounting services, guidance on international translation grants, and onboarding to Ingram’s global distribution network. It further includes access to business loans secured against publishing contracts, and priority entry to future Onshur initiatives.

These measures are designed to help publishers move beyond operational stability and towards sustainable, strategic expansion.

The View From The Beach

Onshur’s Scale Track represents a forward-thinking approach to publisher development, moving beyond traditional training to provide a robust platform for innovation and resilience. By focusing on practical skills, international networking, and ongoing support, the programme is helping to build a new generation of publishers ready to thrive in both local and international markets.

While other countries may not have the UAE’s resources or govt. commitment to publishing to match the model in full, there’s much to be learned here.

The 12 successful publishers were: Ajyal Publishing, Ghaf Publications, Sidra Publishing and Distribution, Loaloa Publishing and Distribution, Kalman Publishing and Distribution, Nabatti Publishing, Shaheen Printing Publishing and Distribution, Dar Al-Farqad, Dar Shams Publishing, Dar Al Fikr Al Jadeed, Dar Al Bayan Al Arabi, and Noor Publishing.

Congrats to all!
