Abuja Book City is more than a promotional event; it is a welcome call to reimagine the role of books as dynamic agents of cultural and educational transformation.

With the theme, “Reading a Unifying Factor”, Abuja – the nation’s Federal Capital Territory – has been designated the Book City for 2025.

The Concept of a Book City

The Book City event is an innovative initiative of the Network of Book Clubs and Reading Culture Promoters in Nigeria (NBRP). Since its establishment in February 2020, the NBRP has been at the forefront of fostering a vibrant reading culture across Nigeria. Each year, a city with a strong local presence of the NBRP is selected to serve as the focal point for a sustained reading promotion campaign.

Previous Book Cities have included Uyo (2021 & 2022), Lagos (2023), and Yenagoa (2024). As Book City, Abuja is now entrusted with the mission to weave the fabric of a reading culture into the everyday lives of Nigerians.

Abuja as the 2025 Book City Abuja’s designation as the Book City for 2025 marks a significant milestone. The year will commence with the flag-off event on 24 April 2025 at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja. As the theme “Reading a Unifying Factor” suggests, this initiative seeks to unite students, teachers, parents, academics, policymakers, government agencies and a broad spectrum of institutions connected to Nigeria’s book and publishing ecosystem. Participants will include key representatives from the National Library of Nigeria, Nigerian Copyright Commission, Association of Nigerian Authors, Booksellers Association of Nigeria, among others.

Key Activities:

Online Reading Event (5 April): This virtual session will feature prominent authors and enthusiastic book lovers, creating an accessible platform to promote discussion and celebrate the joy of reading.

Road Walk (10 April): Set to traverse Abuja’s major thoroughfares, this public walk aims to raise awareness about the importance of books and reading in everyday life. By turning the streets into a stage for activism, organisers are tapping into the unifying power of literature.

Implications for the Publishing Ecosystem

For publishing professionals, the Abuja Book City is more than a promotional event; it is a welcome call to reimagine the role of books as dynamic agents of cultural and educational transformation.
