Hat-tip tip PublishNews for reportage that the first National Award for Children’s and Youth Literature for Quilombola and Roma Authors has opened for entries, aiming to foster literary productions by Quilombola and Roma communities across Brazil.
The award, PublishNews explains, emphasises the importance of tradition, oral storytelling, in valuing the history and culture of these traditional peoples and communities in Brazil. Entries are open until 15th April 2025.
Objectives and Goals
The award seeks to encourage the creation and circulation of Quilombola and Roma literature and invites society to learn about these groups’ cultures. It also aims to strengthen the preservation of their cultural heritage.
Prizes and Recognition
Thirty-six literary works by Quilombola and Roma authors will be awarded, providing an opportunity for these stories to reach a broad audience, whether they are newcomers or established writers. Each of the 36 winners will receive a prize of up to R$20,000 ($3,800).
Organisers and Support
The award is promoted by the Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia (UFRB) through the DIVERSIFICA – Inclusion and Diversity programme, in collaboration with the Ministry of Racial Equality (MIR).
