In contemporary Israel, hundreds of thousands of individuals, beyond the Orthodox community, possess some understanding and ability to speak Yiddish. The fair aims to attract these individuals and introduce them to Yiddish literature and culture.
For the first time in history, an official fair of Jewish books will be held in Israel, supported by a city council. The Yiddish Book Fair will take place on December 29 in Herzliya, under the patronage of the local city council, Leivik House (a local retirement home), and the National Agency for Jewish Culture.
Herzliya boasts four active Jewish circles, primarily composed of Sabres, which regularly gather to celebrate Jewish folklore and literature. This event is made possible thanks to the volunteer efforts of Benny Shafrir, a physicist and prize-winning inventor who leads one of the Jewish circles at Leivik House.
Organisers
Benny Shafrir is assisted by Yaffa Moore of Rennah, a former director of a folk school in Ramat Gan and a lecturer on children’s writing and reading difficulties.
Fair Highlights
Books: Prose, poetry, dramaturgy, essays, and children’s books will be available.
Bilingual Books: Yiddish-Hebrew and Yiddish-English titles.
