With the theme “Publishing in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Exploring the Future of Content Creation, Delivery and Copyright”, the 2024 Annual Conference and General Meeting of the Nigerian Publishers Association last week, saw Dr John Asein, Ph.D., Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, urge publishers, authors, and creatives to harness AI’s potential for timely product creation and delivery.
The NPA Has a New President
The Lagos event saw a new president, Lukman Dauda, elected to head the Nigerian Publishers Association, after a hard-fought contest against obiyinka sunday, and I look forward to monitoring how the NPA will evolve under Dauda’s leadership.
But it was Dr. Asein’s commentary on the potential of AI that caught my eye.
Asein on AI: Own It!
Asein highlighted that AI is not just about technology but also about how users, particularly publishers, can make the best use of it. He believes that AI will empower authors to become publishers and vice versa.
He also mentioned potential challenges, such as licensing, attribution, and fair compensation for the use of copyrighted works to train AI, and advised publishers to take more interest in legal and policy issues affecting their industry.
