It looks like the Pandemic bounce is still with us in many markets, including France, where SNE President Vincent Montagne reports 2022 up over 2019 but down over 2021.
“While 2021 was an exceptional second year in many respects, the results are down around 5% this year, even if this has to be put into perspective, because we are still up 3% compared to 2019.
Antoine Oury notes in ActuaLitté that overall unit sales were down too, by 7%, but that the French market was up 3.7% in value and 3.1% in volume.

For the first time, Spanish is the leading translation language, in 2022, ahead of Chinese, Italian, German, and English. In fact Korean tied with English at just 6%, with Portuguese and Dutch not far behind at 5% each.
And digital formats, clustered together in Oury’s report as one, swam against the tide.

Still only 10.32%, but as for other markets we need to keep in mind the SNE figures only cover reporting publishers, so we can safely assume the wider digital market in France will be more substantial.
Worth noting too that over at Publishing Perspectives, Porter Anderson makes a big deal of French paperback sales pulling in 417.2 million euros, but nowhere mentions the rise in digital numbers.
