Whether things will be better by summer 2021 remains to be seen, but we can safely say the 2021 Cairo International Book Fair will see nowhere near the usual turnout of upwards of two million visitors.

Thanks to ArabLit for catching this breaking news item. The world’s biggest literary event, the Cairo International Book Fair, has been postponed from its January date as the pandemic rages, and is now scheduled to run June 30 through July 15.

Very few details available at this time, but clearly the decision was made not so much because of restrictions in Egypt, bur rather because international travel restrictions mean many of the fair’s participants – both trade and consumer – would be unable to attend in January.

Whether things will be better by summer 2021 remains to be seen, but we can safely say the 2021 Cairo International Book Fair will see nowhere near the usual turnout of upwards of two million visitors.

So far no suggestion that a hybrid in-person and digital event might be on the cards, let alone a digital-only incarnation.
