It may not be the biggest digital library system in Spain, but it has a dedicated audience of Basque and Spanish readers who in the first half of 2020 tripled their loans from eLiburutegia, the digital books arm of the Basque Public Reading Network, with 92,000 books downloaded as lockdown hit the country.
The Department of Culture and Language Policy reported that eLiburutegia exceeded in six months the record for loans in a year in normal times, with 15,196 new users signing up to this specialist digital service.
eLiburutegia fields a small but sought-after catalogue of 17,000 ebooks, 600 audiobooks and 15,000 movies.
